Email from my sister

Hi Beloved Family,

Well, today is the two-year anniversary of Dad's kidney transplant.
He was doing so well, we expected him to have many more years of good
quality of life. At the Lake Poinsette reunion he even told me he
was being encouraged by his doctor to consider a pancreas
transplant. He wasn't too thrilled about it because it has
apparently much harder recovery (like one year), but the thought of
not being diabetic any more was pretty amazing for him. He said he
was probably going meet with some post-transplant pancreas
receipients to understand more about the recovery. If I remember
correctly, he even went to talk to a specialist about it.

Even though we didn't get to have him long after the transplant, his
quality of life was so much better than it was in the 1 1/2 years
priorto the surgery. People in Iowa would still ask me how he's
doing and I'd say he's like 5 years younger. When I told that to
Dad, he said its like he's 7 years younger! I don't think he would
have had even as good quality of life on dialysis. He got to start
his dream house even if he didn't get to finish it.

He never stopped being amazed by the love and support of his family
(you!). He couldn't get over that 5 people were willing to be
considered as donors.


This breaks my heart, I thought I was getting better at this and today is just very hard.My sister is a pretty amazing person.

Grief comes in waves for me. Some days feel just fine, then some thing like an email or a song makes me start to cry. I think you're doing reasonably well, since you didn't ask to be grieving right now, or have time to prepare.
