So yesterday P and I exchanged gifts. I got her a book on how to make kites because I know she loves to do arts and crafts. Also because my Dad and I use to fly kites (and he made them too). She loved her book. She made me a card and included a magazine subscription card to a magazine my Dad use to subscribe to. She also said it was my choice if I wanted it or wanted to choose another one. This is a good time for me to practice making choices but unfortunately, I'm not sure if I want Dwell or something else.

So, I wonder what your favorite magazines are? You might know what I like and most recently I've subscribed to Utne, Ms. magazines. I've also subscribed to Mother Earth News, Mothering, Hip Mama, Tightwad Gazette (okay well this was more of a newsletter).   I also had a friend give me a subscription to something similar to Utne (just remembered, it's called Ode!) but it was more global in perspective (I forget the title) and I bought a couple of "how to" magazines that were published briefly then folded, it was great not like the "Shopping living simple"

So these are my tastes, do you have any suggestions? I was going to look on the Utne site but it appears to be down right now.

I would've totally suggested Utne if you hadn't mentioned it! It's by far my favorite magazine, I've been a subscriber since high school. :)

yep, me too! I just renewed my subscription. I also ordered one for my sister since it was on her Christmas list. It will be a surprise!

Hmm, I don't subscribe to any at all! I just read Mother Earth News, Backpacker, Sierra, things like that when I'm at work.

I used to like reading The Ecologist when I was at the U. But that is a UK publication, I don't know how available it is here (or for how much!). It was a bit more globally-oriented than Mother Earth News, and much less Green Is God. More practical.

Yeah, it's too bad that our magazines here aren't as good as they were when I was at Macalester!

I used to subscribe to Dwell, the New Yorker, Print, and Bitch. I still subscribe to Bitch, but that's it. (I used to get Utne for free when my friend was the librarian there, but I don't anymore.)

Ooh, that must have been Chris, I wanted to do an intern there but I just couldn't swing the commute for nearly nothing in wages. Ahh...to be young with no responsiblities. Perhaps I could do it when I'm done here if I find no other work, volunteer there and the GLBT library...hmm, nice idea.

I like "Working Mother", "Real Simple" (apologies if that's the one you DON'T like, lol), most news magazines, and "More" (for ahem, 40 somethings and up, but it's good anyway).

Yep, that's the title...I do read it from time to time at the library but it just seems like an excuse to go shopping. GRIN Thanks for your comment!

I actually really like Dwell or any modern design/architecture books. Did your papa like Dwell for design ideas or did he just enjoy the aesthetics of the magazine?

I like hearing stories about your papa. Maybe you should make a journal dedicated to writing a story about him once a day? I loved hearing stories about my dad too, given that he died when I was so young I wouldn't have many to tell now if someone didn't dedicate time to telling me about him.

Yeah, my Dad was amazing and I think I just may start a journal for him. I think it would help me to be able to remember him and talk about him. He was a very rare breed and I miss him.

Thanks for the nudge.

I'm a huge fan of Smithsonian and National Geographic, but that's just the kind of geek I am, you know?

Geeks are good! My Dad actually gave me a subscription to Smithsonian one year, I loved the pictures.
