What a wonderful weekend....

So Thursday morning I left my house around 8am to drive to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area via the Gun Flint Trail. I was meeting a group see www.wildernessinquiry.org for a womens 3 night winter adventure trip.

Thursday we essentially settled in to our cabins, had a nice dinner, talked and got an idea about what the next few days were going to bring. I always have a hard time falling asleep in a different place so I didn't sleep that well on this night. I shared a cabin with 2 sisters and a woman from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Friday morning I got up and went to greet the dogs. Dog sledding is SO fun. I only tipped the sled once and once lost my balance which caused me to drag my leg under and create a very large bruise. (you know the kind, that are really more of an egg). That afternoon, I snowshoed up to Daniel's point and that was amazing. That night, I attempted to sleep outside. I was warm enough but couldn't do it because I was wrapped in two sleeping bags, one being a mummy one that prevented me from being able to raise my right leg (I sleep on my tummy with one leg up like a flamingo) my hands and nose were too cold for me to fall asleep. After a couple of hours lying there trying to fall asleep and seeing a couple of other women leave...the moment I realized I'd needed to get up and pee anyways, I left. It was beautiful though, stars and the northern lights. It was still difficult to fall asleep when I got up to the heated cabin.

Saturday morning, I went snowshoeing again up to Caribou Point. It was a long hike across the lake, up the road to the access point to the trail but the view was amazing. Apparently this is a well known hiking spot. I'd totally love to do something like this in the future in warmer weather. After the hike, we had lunch and I spent the rest of the afternoon in the lodge. I had wanted to cross country ski but was feeling pretty wiped out and wanted to take a break. That night after dinner, we had a sauna and once we were really hot, we jumped in the lake. The staff at the lodge keep a door on the lake to prevent the spot from freezing over. I jumped in the lake 2 times, the last one being a full dunk. I'm glad to say that I've done this, wouldn't necessarily need to do it again. This night was much easier to sleep.

Sunday morning up to pack and clean up. On the road again. The women of the group were wonderful and there was talk of this particular group doing it again next year. I love when people have a good time, but I'm pretty skeptical of people actually following through with that. Although, I would totally do it again. Really great food, great women, great staff and very good times.

Sounds like a great time! I spent some time in the BWCA when I was a teen. Beautiful country.

Yeah, I've been there a number of times during the warmer weather but never in the winter. It was actually very warm when we were there, 30's. I mostly wore long underware (tops and bottoms), fleece and wind pants.
