Don't you love homophobic people !

Keep in mind that I'm not out at work...but I don't shy away from bring up things or indicating that I've got some knowledge in that area...

So last week I was attending our team staff meeting and one of the members was talking about Queer Eye and in a playful manner suggested to our immediate supervisor that he needs their assistance. My immediate supervisor responded by saying "I'm so homophobic...." with a grin on his face. I was so offended that I didn't know how to respond to that. The only thing I was able to blurt out is that a gay man wouldn't be interested in him as a straight man.

After the meeting its customary that some of us go for lunch. I did bring his comments up because I was still in shock and I really couldn't identify clearly why. Other than I was offended. My immediate supervisor I believe has a good heart even through we have different opinions regarding religion(hint...he's born again christian). The folks at lunch also agreed it wasn't okay and we weren't sure about how to handle it. One of them(who I think has a sister who's a lesbian, but I don't know for sure) indicated she was going to request our from our HR department(one person) that we have some education around diversity. After lunch I took a longer way back to the office so I could get some exercise but I also realized that his actions were no different than if I stood up and announced proudly that I was racist and for most people that's no longer acceptable. I went in and spoke to him, he apologized and sent an email to our team apologizing but it certainly has changed my outlook on him.

HR's response to the request for education was brief and indicated that the request would be taken to the leadership team meeting.

What do you think ? Along the same topic...have you heard Lori Mckenna's "Pink Sweater" or "Ruby's Shoes" ?
